Which is better for me - a 2-stroke or 4-stroke?
This depends upon your situation and personal preferences.
* Sloping ground greater than 10 degrees - use a 2-stroke engine.
* If you have heavy growth or you intend to mulch your grass most of the time then a 2-stroke is best.
* If you only cut light conditions then a 4-stroke would be satisfactory.
* If you will change your own cutting blades, then this is easier with a 2-stroke as you don’t need to be careful how you turn over your mower.
* A 2-stroke requires less effort to start.
* Do you have a 2-stroke petrol trimmer? If so, you can use the same fuel in both engines. Refer to manufacturers specifications.
* Do you have a large area, if so a more powerful engine allows the cutting to be done quicker.
* What do you feel is easier, mix oil with petrol or change to engine oil?

What is the difference between the 2-stroke VS160 and the VSX160?
The physical difference is in the carburettor set up and the size of the air intake snorkel and the design of the intake manifold. The result is that the VSX160 has 25% more torque than the VS160. The VSX has improved response to load compared to the VS160. This means you cut the grass in shorter time with the VSX160.

What is the air gap for the flywheel pole shoes to the lamination stack on the 2-stroke mower?
The air gap is 0.25mm (0.010 inches).  Make sure the gap is 0.010 inches on both sides.  Check also the clearance at the balance counterweight opposite pole shoes. Balance counterweight should be more ½ mm than 0.010.

Why are there different warranties on different models?

Because of different features on varying models at different price ranges.

What is the horsepower rating of my 2-stroke engine?
Victa do not quote horsepower ratings for engines, as horsepower is not a good indication of an engines ability to mow grass.  Low speed "Torque" is the best measure of an engines ability to perform well mowing grass and to resist stalling.

What is the horsepower rating of my 4-stroke engine?
Victa do not quote horsepower ratings for engines, as horsepower is not a good indication of an engines ability to mow grass.  Low speed "Torque" is the best measure of an engines ability to perform well mowing grass and to resist stalling.

Where is the air filter located on my 4-stroke and can I clean it?
Please refer to the owners manual for the particular model of engine.

On the side of the engine cowl, and if you know what to do you can clean it.  Do not use solvents or compressed air to clean air filter.

Note: Some Victa 4-stroke engines use a secondary filter at the top of the upper handle.

Where is the air filter located on the 2-stroke engine and how can I clean it?
Inside the black plastic housing beside the throttle lever.

To remove and clean:
1) Use screwdriver and lever off cap (screwdriver slot is on inside face).
2) Lower upper handle so that top of handle rests on the ground (This stops dust falling down into the snorkel).
3) Carefully pull out the air filter.
4) The air filter can be cleaned by gently tapping one end of the outside body against something solid. Don’t use compressed air or try to wash the filter. Check for any splits or tears in the paper element.
5) With the upper handle still lowered, tap the throttle control housing to allow any dust to fall out.
6) Raise the upper handle to the mowing position.
7) Check that the dark grey foam seal is in position. Replace if damaged
8) Insert air filter so that hole in end of the filter fits over the hole in the housing.
9) Refit end cap, engage at top edge then snap in at the bottom.

What type of fuel should I use in my mower?
Regular unleaded fuel should be used in both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines.  There is no need to run premium unleaded fuel in any lawn mower.

What is the correct mix of petrol / oil?
This depends upon the oil you are adding to the petrol.
For typical standard oil the ratio is 25: 1
For Victa Valvoline Formula V the ratio is 50:1

What does the ratio mean? - To find out how much oil you need to add to the Petrol, divide the quantity of petrol by the ratio.

For example:
5 litres of petrol at 25:1, how much oil needs to be added?
5000ml divided 25 = 200ml of oil
Note: 5 litres = 5000 ml & 1 litre = 1000 ml.

What type of oil goes into a 2-stroke mix
Victa Formula V 2-stroke oil.  Air cooled two stroke oil is especially formulated for this type of engine. As the oil is burnt in the combustion chamber carbon is formed. This oil has low “ash” properties to reduce this build up. In the Victa 2-stroke engine, do not use the following oils:
1) Motor vehicle type engine oils
2) Oil designed for use in water cooled 2-stroke engines (Outboard Oil)

What quantity of oil goes in my 4-stroke engine?
Briggs and Stratton Engines:  For engines from the Sprint 375 to Quantum 60 the crankcase oil capacity is 600 ml. The maximum and minimum oil levels are marked on the dipstick. When using the dipstick check the level three times looking at both sides of the dipstick (they should be at the same level), wipe the dipstick clean before each check.

Please Note: The dipstick on the Victa 4-stroke engine Sprint 375, is not readily seen, being smaller and of the same colour as the engine, it is located at the rear left hand corner of the engine (as you stand behinds the handles).

Honda Engines: 550 ml of oil

Tecumseh Engines: 600 ml of oil – please note that the Formula 3.5 does not have a dipstick.

What type of oil should I use in my 4-stroke engine?
Briggs and Stratton engines – use SAE30 mono grade oil (Victa Formula V 4-stroke high performance engine oil)
Honda Engines – use SAE10W – 30 as per Victa Spec 4-stroke
Tecumseh Engines – use SAE30 mono grade oil (Victa Formula V 4- stroke high performance engine oil)

How do I drain the oil from my 4-stroke engine?
For Briggs and Stratton and Honda Engines:

Ensure that the fuel tank is empty
Turn fuel tap to the "off" position (if applicable)
Remove the dipstick / oil filler cap
Incline the engine towards the oil filler tube as to drain the oil out of the "fill tube" and into an oil container
Refill the engine with the correct grade oil
Refit the dipstick / oil filler cap and check the oil level

Should I dispose of the blue liner under the fuel cap on my 4-stroke?
Yes - the blue liner is not required.

How tight should the blades be screwed on?
Blade Nut torque 14 – 19 Newton Metres
                     Or 10 – 14 Foot lbs
                     Or 120 – 168 Inch lbs

It is important not to overtighten the nut, as this could crack the thread on the blade bolt, causing the blade bolt to break in use, thereby releasing the blade, which could result in serious injury to operator or bystander. The blades should be “tight” to pivot, but not loose.

Can I change the blades myself?
Yes you can, provided:
a) You have the correct tools.
b) You know the correct order of assembly & orientation of the parts.

If you are unsure ask, or have your local dealer change the blades.

My blades are turned in. Will they open out when the mower is started?
Yes they will open out, when the engine starts. Do not try to reposition the blades.

Where do I go to get my Victa serviced?
